Hair Retaining Challenge Phase 1

What is a Hair Retaining Challenge (HRC)?
It is a challenge where I intend to keep as much hair that grows out of my scalp as possible.
Lack of  the retention of new growth can result in a retarded hair length where it seems like the hair has reached it's plateau in hair growth. So many women, myself included will conclude that their hair will never grow past the particular length it's currently at, whether it be chin length or neck length.

Jan 2011/Dec 2012

Since everyone's hair grows, with the exception of those with hair loss related issue such as alopecia and cancer patients, I know my hair is growing at an healthy rate. I also know that my hair could be longer than what it is right now if proper measures had been taken. So instead of going on the ever so popular hair growth challenge, I've decided to tackle the biggest enemy of long or visibly growing hair which is HAIR RETENTION!

What will I be doing to achieve my goal?
The reason why many don't retain the new growth they get each month is mostly due to breakage. My hair is tightly coiled and very dry, meaning it's prone to breakage. I know the amount of hair I lost each time I manipulate my hair can be significantly reduced only if I change some of the ways I handle my hair. So over the next 6months. i'm going to be trying some techniques which are meant to SAVE MY ENDS. The end result will be to ensure that this oldest part of my hair isn't breaking at nearly the same rate as my new growth. I will be keeping you updated on these different techniques along with their end results.

What is my goal length for the first phase?
By the end of June, I hope my hair will be at least 3inches longer

  1. I think this is a very doable goal. Manipulating your hair can cause breakage. Detangling can also. Good luck on your hair journey.

    1. everything causes breakage! its inevitable and very annoying. But my goal is to work with it and minimize it

  2. i love this challenge! last year i made a really concentrated effort to not just "grow" my hair but to learn to take care of it...and one of my biggest goals was retention. i actually just checked the length last months (about 10 months after setting my goal) and the growth was incredible. i had always had that length i thought it couldn't grow beyond and it's passed that - i'm so happy that i'm actually learning how to take proper care of my hair and the efforts are showing.

i actually have a post going up next week about what i use (i tried a few products and have found ones i like) and then i'm working on a post on what i've done, beyond products, that has helped - retention is one of them!

    1. I look forward to reading that post. Would look to see some before and after pics as well. Retention is really the key to visible hair growth and i'm on my way of getting to the root of it.
