In the last 3.5 years that I've had my Afro hair for, I had two failed attempts trying to straighten my hair. What I ended up with each time was a "blow out" look. So instead of dwelling on past failures, I decided to learn from those mistakes and aim for a successful try this time! Knowing that I've achieved a record breaking* length, I really wanted to see how my current hair length looks straight and hopefully flaunt it for a few days. So, I borrowed my sister's blow dryer (yes, I don't have one) and hair straightener to help accomplish the task!
The Mane activities I did over the period of 3 days is detailed below, so enjoy :)
I gave my hair another trim this time |
On the First night, I first washed my hair with a sulphate based shampoo since I haven't washed my hair in about a month. I then applied home made protein conditioner which consisted of mayo, egg, and olive oil. I left the conditioner in for about 20minutes and rinsed off with lukewarm water to help rinse out the smell. PLEASE DO NOT use hot water to rinse off a egg treatment because you will end up with scrambled eggs on your head!
Heating cap with for deep conditioning session. Purchased this while I was living in China |
I then rinsed off the treatment, towel dried, applied a leave in conditioner and olive oil to seal. And finally, I styled my hair in Bantu-knots and postponed further hair handling until the following day.
This entire process took about 3hours.
To reduce the chances of my hair reverting, I twisted each blown out section. However, the ends managed to untwist and coil back up |
Day 2
I applied a heat protectant and rewet the hair for the blow out session. I then did a blow out using the tension blow out method as well as the regular method (combing the hair as you blow dry). I then twisted each section in order to keep the hair tidy. This process again took me about 3hours, and so I adjourned further styling until the next day!Day 3
I plugged my straighter and set the temperature to 160deg celcius and then proceeded to straightening. I didn't apply additional heat protectant to my hair this time, but I did apply a mixture of castor oil and olive oil to the hair in order for the iron to smoothly glide down my hair. I was very disappointed that the ends stayed coiled up! I had try to get them as straight as possible when I did the blow out, but I discovered they were just breaking off. So instead of shortening my hair and putting it through more stress, I just had to co-operate with it and let it do its own thing. This entire process took me about 2hours.
So, ladies and gentlemen, after 3 hair straightening attempts, 10 hours later, and 3 days in the making, this is what I managed to come up with this time.
**The time spent on my hair was prolonged because I entertained myself with some Nollywood movies :)
*My record breaking length is a length I have never seen my hair in but I believe I reached this mark last spring.
Heheh yo bt the blow out look looks good thought
