10 places to get (Natural) Hair Care Products in Canada

Products and tools from 5 different places!

As a Naturalista, new or veteran, it can be very hard, nearly impossible or impossible to find most of the products we hear and read about from other Naturalistas down south. The fact that we also don't have some of the stores that carry Natural Hair products in the United States can make one's Natural hair journey frustrating. Though stores like Targets and Whole Foods can now be found in select cities across Canada, the products and brands they carry is still not the same as The United States. To make matters worse, many businesses in The States don't even ship to Canada!

The scarcity of Natural hair products in Canada can lead one to believe that natural hair products DO NOT exist in Canada. While this may be true for someone who live in a smaller town or a city with very few Blacks, this is actually the opposite for a Naturalista who lives in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Of course with advancement of technology and the reliable postal service in this great country of ours, Naturalistas in every part of Canada can enjoy the convenience of E-commerce and not feel left out.

So, where can you find Natural Hair products in Canada? Below, I have listed the stores I get my products from. If a store isn't mentioned on here, please feel free to post it in the comment section below.

1. Health Food Stores: As a mixtress who likes to mix different concoctions together, my favourite place to get my ingredients from is the health food store. This is the ONLY place you'll find most, if not all of the natural and organic products you hear and read about.
Products: Aloe Vera GelAloe Vera Juice, Extra Virgin Coconut oil, Mango butter, Cocoa butter, Shea Butter, and Flax seeds. Hair products such as Avalon Organics, Aubrey Organics, Jason, Giovanni and many others can also be found here.
The selection of products and brands that each store carries will vary from store to store.

2. Grocery Stores
If you're a mixtress like I am, aside from the hair store and health food store, your other favourite place will be the grocery store. You can get simple ingredients for your hair recipes from store like No Frills, Metro and Loblaws (which also has an organic hair product section).
Products: Mayonnaise, Olive oil, apple cider vinegar, eggs, and honey.

3.Whole Foods Market: Since this is still a fairly new store in Canada, there might not be one in your city.
Products: Castile soap, carrier oils, coconut oil, olive oil, essential oils and select natural and organic hair care products.
4. Wal-Mart: for cheaper prices, this is the best place to go.
Products: Herbal Essence, Tresemme, Olive oil, Apple Cider Vinegar and hair accessories and tools.
5. Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM): Like wal-mart, you can also find similar products here but at a higher price although they carry more brand and product lines within a brand. You can also find hair accessories such as bobby pins, head bands, brushes and combs at SDM. Since SDM also has a small grocery section, you can purchase olive oil  here as well.

6. Clore Beauty Supply (Korean owned stores): This is one of the only two hair and beauty store in Canada (according to my knowledge) that carries Black owned natural hair products that we hear about on YT (YouTube).
Products: Shea Moisture line, Jamaican Black Castor Oil line, Kinky Curly line and others. Infact, they have an entire aisle dedicated to Natural hair products! As this is a hair store, you can also get almost every other hair care products, tools and accessories needed, including hair extensions like marley hair. This store also gives a reward card that allows customers to save 1% on each purchase.
7. Honey Fig: Unlike Clore, this store/boutique actually carries more brand, giving you more options to choose from. If there's any Natural Hair product or tool you've heard or read about somewhere, I can almost guarantee that Honey Fig will have it. While I haven't been to this store yet due to distance, I have read great reviews about it. They also ship across Canada for those who live far away.
Products: As I am, Shea Moisture, Jane Carter, Kinky Curly, Darcy Botanicals and much more.

8. www.well.ca. As the name says, this is an online store that carries pretty much EVERYTHING, hair and non hair related. They also provide FREE shipping across Canada for orders over $25.
Products: Essential Oils, Carrier Oils, Coconut Oil, Aubrey Organics, Giovanni and others

9. Winners/Marshalls: This is my favourite store to shop at because I can get pretty much EVERYTHING from this store, including food and hair products. You can really find fabulous things for less at these stores.
Products: Giovanni, Avalon Organics, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) and other sulphate and silicone free products.

10. African Store: I only buy Raw Shea butter from this store. The shea butters at these stores are also the cheapest as they come in plastic wraps and are in the rawest form. You can also get shea butters in fancier packaging from health food stores and wal-mart.

  5. Thank you for collecting this excellent resource, though it's a little Ontario-centric. I'd like to add to it if possible though! Those of us outside Ontario and Québec are the ones who need the most help finding (in-person) stores, and Western Canada has some completely different store chains in place of some of the in-person ones you list. Rural towns everywhere are inconvenient but naturals even in *cities* in either SK, MB, or the Maritimes are in a tight spot if they can't order online for whatever reason. ;_; It's practically the same thing as listing stores in the States, lol. Kinky Curly's store locator will let you search by Canadian city & lists the following in Canada, though. From them I found the following two places which obviously would also carry other lines as well:

    • Afro Hair Studio (Vancouver & online; free shipping over $25)
    http://afrohairstudio.com/store/product-category/kinky-curly/

    • Trendy Strands (Calgary; in-person only)
    12 - 3745 Memorial Dr SE Calgary Alberta, T2A 6V4, 403-453-0452

No Kinky Curly, but Aubrey & other organics/botanicals:

    • Amazon.ca (also free shipping on orders over $25)! =)

Beyond that, I tried London Drugs, a big-box drug store chain in the West much like SDM, but they're no good for naturals unfortunately. SDM is Canada-wide but I'm not wowed with their selection either since I'm going *strict* Maximum Hydration Method/modified-CG (after flailing around using shampoos and glycerin-filled products as parts of my routine for the last two years I'm finally admitting they're a bad idea and giving them up, lol). Natural Health stores are everywhere, but they're expensive!

Anyway, thanks again and I hope you'll add these to your list. <3
