Do I Need to do Protein Treatments for my Kids Natural Hair?

By DiscoveringNatural

I started doing a Protein Treatment on my children's hair when they were 5 years old.  Why that age?  I believe that by this age, they have outgrown their baby hair (hair from the womb) and their natural hair characteristics are now pretty established.

With that being said, the question would be: Is It Necessary to do a Protein Treatment on their hair?  My answer is "Yes"....and "No".

The reason why I have a dual response to this question is mainly because All hair is different, what works for one person might not work for another person.

With natural hair, it is important to have a balance of moisture and protein to keep the hair at its ultimate health. This is the main reason why I incorporate a monthly Protein Treatment into their regimen. It has really helped us a lot. Not only has it strengthened their hair, it has also made it more resilient.

Protein-Moisture Balance Quick Review

If you are considering adding Protein Treatment to your child's hair regimen, consider the following:
1. Is your child's hair thriving without a protein treatment?
2. If you take a strand of his/her hair and stretch it and release, does it stay stretched?

If you answered Yes to question 1, then you are okay. Keep doing what you are doing. Probably, the products you use contains ingredients that have protein in them.

If you answered Yes to question 2, then you might one to consider doing a light protein treatment on your child's hair.

Protein Treatment Options
Commercial Product
I love using the Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner. This is a great light protein treatment that can also be used as a quick deep conditioner post cleansing. It leaves the hair feeling soft. Click here to watch my Product Review of this product. You can find this on Amazon or any Health stores.

DIY Product
There are two recipes I love, one is my DIY Protein Treatment for Shine, and the one below is a simple treatment that strengthens the hair immediately after use. Both recipes contains banana. You can use either use a very ripe banana (blended to liquid) or a jar of banana baby food.

Here is the recipe: 1/2 cup of Mayonnaise (strengthens hair)
1/4 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (anti-inflammatory, emollient, rich in fatty acids)
1 banana (soften hair, improves elasticity, strengthens, promote shine)
1 tablespoon Raw Honey (humectant , smoothens cuticles)
